Synopsis
Lt. Colonel Stans, an Army veteran in a Maryland hospital, has tried several times to commit suicide, all without success. He tells Mulder and Scully that someone, a soldier, won't let him die and has already killed off his wife and children. Scully chalks it up to a classic case of post-traumatic stress. Stans' commanding officer, General Thomas Callahan, also hears a threat from a phantom soldier, and gets a creepy message on his answering machine.
Someone gives Callahan a scare at his home; he leaves behind clues that lead to a mail boy who's had a lot of contact with a quadruple amputee nicknamed Rappo and has letters to the deceased in his home. The mail boy is killed not long after screaming for help because "he knows this place." Mulder suspects Rappo despite his condition, possibly due to an out-of-body attack. Callahan realizes that Rappo is to blame; however, he refuses to kill him, saying Rappo will suffer like the rest of them. Stans isn't above smothering Rappo, though, and the mayhem ceases. Mulder notes the phenomenon of phantom limbs, and wonders if Rappo had a phantom soul.
Ian Tracey, who plays Leonard "Rappo" Trimble, has credits including Huckleberry Finn on Huckleberry Finn and His Friends, Spider Garvin on Sweating Bullets, and Detective Mick Leary on Da Vinci's Inquest.
