Synopsis
The X-Files have been closed, and Mulder is bored with his new wiretapping assignment while Scully teaches at Quantico. A senator in contact with Mulder advises him to get to the radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, an extraterrestrial intelligence search site that has (in the series anyway) been shut down. Here, Mulder discovers a recording from the Voyager spacecraft that has been returned to Earth. He also finds a terrified man in the facility, who dies shortly after running out into a storm.
After a bit of a close encounter, Scully arrives at Arecibo. The two leave with the tape recording as the military arrives on scene. Back in Washington, Skinner chews out Mulder for leaving his wiretap assignment, but surprisingly kicks the Cigarette-Smoking Man out of his office and lets Mulder return to his assignment without punishment after deducing that the Cigarette-Smoking Man tapped Mulder's phone. Mulder finds that the tape is blank, wiped by the storm or other means.
Raymond J. Barry, who plays Senator Richard Matheson in this and two other episodes, also played Pa Cox in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
