Season 5, Episode 6: Christmas Carol

Synopsis

It's Christmastime in San Diego, and Scully is spending the holidays with her family at her brother's house. While there, she gets an anonymous phone call, with her dead sister Melissa's voice, telling Scully that someone needs her help. She gets a trace on the number and finds that the call came from a residence where a woman named Roberta has committed suicide, leaving the phone off the hook and a young daughter named Emily behind. After seeing Emily in a dream and getting a repeat call, Scully gets some information from the police, and finds there was a recent domestic violence call to the residence and that the woman was on a new kind of migraine medicine.

Scully discovers that Emily looks an awful lot like a younger version of Melissa, and that Emily was adopted. After another dream involving Roberta and an analysis of the evidence, Scully suggests to the police that Roberta's husband, Marshall, may have murdered her. After an autopsy doesn't turn up any pills, she concludes that she may have been discreetly injected with an overdose of the medication. Testing Emily's blood against Melissa's, Scully finds that they have identical PCR results and believes Emily is Melissa's daughter.

Emily, an anemic, is found to have been a patient in clinical trials at a pharmaceutical company, and Marshall is arrested for murder. Emily is taken elsewhere, and Scully gives her the cross necklace she got for Christmas (along with Melissa) in her childhood. Marshall confesses to the murder, then turns up dead after a visit from a couple of suited men. Scully's brother, Bill, shows Scully a photo of Melissa that shows her looking very non-pregnant about a month before Emily was born. Scully, who has been barren since her abduction, tries to adopt Emily but is advised against it by a county worker due to the nature of her job and Emily's incurable disease.

On Christmas Day, the results of a DNA test between Melissa and Emily arrive and show that Melissa's DNA has several similarities to Emily's, but she's not the mother. The lab guys take the liberty of testing Scully's DNA as well, however, and find that she is apparently Emily's mother. To be continued...

Karri Turner, who plays Tara Scully, also played Lt. Harriet Sims on JAG. Gerard Plunkett, who plays Dr. Calderon, played Chief Coroner Bob Kelly on Da Vinci's Inquest. Dan Shea, uncredited as a deputy, has done a lot of stuntwork and also starred as Sgt. Siler on Stargate: Atlantis. Stephen Mendel, uncredited as a dark-suited man, played Detective Freddie Carson on the 1980s show Night Heat.
