Season 4, Episode 1: Herrenvolk

Synopsis

In Alberta, Canada, a group of five identical boys arrive at a remote location right after a telephone worker has been stung by a bee. The worker dies, and the boys walk off into a field, having never said a word. The title in the opening reads "Everything Dies."

Back in the Maryland junkyard, Mulder tells Smith that he wants Smith to see his mother. The Alien Bounty Hunter chases Smith, but is neck-stabbed and not quite killed by Mulder; he tries unsuccessfully to find out from Scully where Mulder and Smith are off to. Smith tells Mulder that the government is behind a hegemonic plan to create a new origin of species, but Mulder is more concerned about his dying mother. Smith correctly guesses her hospital room is being staked out by the Syndicate, so he and Mulder go to Canada instead; the Alien Bounty Hunter pursues after hearing about this on a phone call from Mulder to Scully.

The FBI has found that the five Smiths have been putting in a ton of extra entries at their work stations. In Canada, Smith shows Mulder a grow operation of an unknown flowering shrub being grown for its pollen; it is being tended by the clone children, including one who looks like Samantha on the day she was abducted. Scully summons Mr. X, who tells her that the data entries (all starting with the letters SEP) refer to a smallpox eradication program; he tells her not to pursue it and protect Mulder's mother instead.

The Alien Bounty Hunter raids the Canadian facility, but Mulder and Smith and a Samantha clone are able to escape. Scully analyzes her blood and the blood of a fellow agent, and finds genetic tags; she feels that the tags are being placed through smallpox inoculations as a sort of inventory. The Alien Bounty Hunter attacks again, and says the title line when Mulder offers to trade his life for Smith's and thus his mother's; Smith gets away.

Back in D.C., Mr. X is shot in Mulder's apartment building by an assassin after being summoned there. Before he dies, he writes SRSG on the floor in his own blood. This leads Mulder to the assistant to the special representative to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Marita Covarrubias. She tells him the farm has been abandoned, but leaks him a folder that includes a photo of the clone children working there. In order that Mulder still has something to lose, Cancer Man has the Alien Bounty Hunter heal Mulder's mother.

Didn't mention it in her first appearance, but Vanessa Morley, playing Young Samantha Mulder here and in four other episodes, plus the first movie, returned older and wiser in the second movie as an uncredited agent.

Telephone repairman: dies after getting stung by a bee and falling off a telephone pole.

Samantha clone: Mulder doesn't have her with him when he returns, and it seems to be hinted that the Alien Bounty Hunter killed her. The other Samantha clones were aliens, so I'll mark her as one as well.

Mr. X: shot by an assassin outside Mulder's apartment.
