Season 3, Episode 17: Pusher

Synopsis

A man known only as "Pusher" is apprehended while buying a body-building protein in a Virginia supermarket. He causes the police officer transporting him to fail to see an approaching truck, and also manages to get the mortally wounded cop to free him. A surviving officer says Pusher is suspected in a series of contract killings, though the deaths have gone down as suicides. Another attempted capture results in a SWAT man immolating himself, but a seriously fatigued Pusher is found and arrested by Mulder.

Pusher, now identified as Robert Patrick Modell, appears in court, having confessed to 14 murders. Mulder says Modell has a suggestive ability that allows him to maintain his innocence...an ability that helps him get released. It also turns out that Modell applied to the FBI, but was rejected as an extreme egotist. Modell manages to con his way into the FBI offices in search of personnel files, and escapes Skinner's apprehension attempt when he convinces another employee that Skinner mugged her.

Mulder wonders if Modell gained his abilities through a recent brain tumor and has to frequently replenish himself with energy supplements. Modell calls his apartment after a raid and talks an officer into a fatal heart attack. Modell tells Mulder he wants a worthy adversary; Mulder finds out that he'll be at a hospital, and decides to go in alone to avoid collateral damage. He decides to go ahead with the plan, even though Modell is dying and has caused another two deaths. Modell convinces Mulder to play a round of Russian roulette; with a little help from Scully, Mulder breaks the trance, shoots Modell, and leaves him in a coma.

Robert Wisden, who plays Robert Patrick Modell, also played Chief Coroner James Flynn in Da Vinci's Inquest and Richard Nixon in Watchmen. Dina Walters, uncredited as an FBI archivist, had a role as Dottie Sunshine in the Greg the Bunny for its brief run.
